Dalila Belato was born in 1982 in Palermo, Sicily. Her artistic formation was dedicated to sculpture, modelling and stone restoration studies and her distinctive works have been widely exhibited in Italy. In 2015, she won the sculpture category prize at Expo ArteItaliana curated by well-known Italian art critic Vittorio Sgarbi.
Belato defies traditions of sculptural reliefs, creating disconcerting yet comical faces using different techniques and mixed materials. Although resembling classical materials, it is Belato’s skilled handling and final glaze which gives this effect. Her fascination with the human anatomy is clear in these detailed, realistic faces whose caricature-like expressions both shock and mesmerise.
